The first impression is to enter into an open spacecraft capable of carrying four passengers, besides the pilot, and flying not in space, but on the water. It’s the Sea Bubble, the first electric river taxi, tested for the very first time on June 14th in Paris, on the Seine, for the presentation of the vehicle at Viva Tech, the Salon of Technology Innovation, which takes place near Versailles.
It’s equipped with two electric motors to have zero environmental impact. According to its inventors, French sailor Alain Thébault and Swedish surfer Anders Bringdal, the Sea Bubble represents the future of transport in traffic congested cities such as Paris.
The first prototype of the Sea Bubble, the river taxi, has been presented last December, and has immediately gained the interest of the French Government; in fact, the institution invested 500,000 euros, in partnership with some companies such as Google, Tesla and Uber.

Until now, five Sea Bubbles have been realised. Under each vehicle there are wings that raise the taxi from the water, thus giving the feeling of ‘flying’, reducing the resistance during transport and, during the stops, allowing the Bubble to float 70 centimetres above the surface of the river.
After the first positive test, the French Government is ready for a second, much more important investment. The final goal is to build about 5,000 specimens. In the meantime, the project has sparked the world’s attention, mainly because of the benefits of Sea Bubbles. Some examples: good ticket prices, respect for the environment and fast shipping. At least 100 businessmen said to be ready to buy their own vehicle. And while London and Switzerland expressed their interest, another 1,500 Sea Bubbles could be produced and sold for the American market.

And while Thébault and Bringdal enjoy their success, they’re already thinking about the second event. It’ll be the first test with passengers, scheduled in September, between the 20th and 30th. So, if you were to be in Paris by the end of September, do not miss the opportunity to meet the future. While walking along the Seine, try to board on the ‘river taxi’ as the first passengers. Very soon we could see Sea Bubbles on the River Thames in London , or the Tiber in Rome.
