Never ending rows of olive trees warmly welcome you to Salento. A vegetation that tells the story of mankind and that seems to be sculpted by an artist. And then vines, pink pepper plants, rosemary, fig trees, citrus fruits, and lots and lots of aloe vera. When you start catching glimpses of the latter, you’ve finally landed in Martano, 25 km south of Lecce. Right in the heart of the Grecìa Salentina area.
This small hamlet of 9.500 inhabitants became prominent on the national news on July 19th, 2017, when it became the World Capital of Aloe. Together with celebrities such as Helen Mirren and Taylor Hackford, the town was invaded by 3000 aloe plants, with the goal of gathering farmers and entrepreneurs in the development of this type of plantation. The mind behind this project is that of Domenico Scordari, founder of ‘Natura & Benessere’, historic natural & bio cosmetics brand and owner of the Naturalis Bio Resort & Spa.
“An ancient farming hamlet studded with millenary olive trees”
Surrounded by an idyllic and grand garden, the Naturalis Bio Resort & Spa opened its doors in 2003, after the accurate reconstruction of a farming hamlet that dated back to the XVIII century. Eight rooms: Deluxe and Junior Suites. Vast and airy, they all feature a private kitchen, a fireplace and a chromotherapy shower.
The view from all the Deluxe rooms converges over the most ancient inhabitant of this place: a millenary olive tree that reigns over the central garden of the Masseria. On the other hand, the Junior Suites feature an en-suite Jacuzzi and a dehors where to where to dine or sunbath.
“A place where man and Nature come together”
It’s not by chance that the owners of the Naturalis Resort have dedicated years to the research on aromatic plants and their applicability to cosmetics. In fact, the Resort is thought of as a place where man and Nature come together. You get Nature all around and on your skin too.
That’s where eco-chic details come from. The pillow gets perfumed with eucalyptus, lemon balm and lavender. Lanterns emanate a warm and dim light. The rooms live up to their Nature-inspired names – ‘Rosemary’, ‘Orange tree’ – each one recalling it in colours and furniture. And finally, the Natura & Benessere products for a cuddle in the bathroom.
“An exclusive Spa where to enjoy a massage or a hammam ritual, surrounded by lemon balm and rosemary aromas”
Wellness takes the shape of a Spa Suite, private and welcoming. Guests may book a massage or a hammam ritual, surrounded by the soft candlelight and by lemon balm and rosemary aromas.
You shouldn’t miss the relaxing tour that alternates a chemotherapy shower, the 34°C pool with marine salt and magnesium, and the hammam. An expert beautician will advise you on everything you need, being it calming or pain-relieving massages, all rigorously performed with essential and aromatic oils. Alternatively, you may enjoy a private session with a fitness trainer, practice some Vinyasa Yoga or get a Reiki treatment.
Strolling around the beautiful garden, you’ll finally reach the Bio Infinity Swimming Pool with its pool bar.
“Back to the flavours and to the remedies of our ancestors”
From brunch to the aperitif, from breakfast to dinner, the products from the botanic garden of the Naturalis Resort will colour your dining table, full of the authentic flavours of the traditional Apulian cuisine.
Next to the aromatic herbs and fruits, a miraculous plant reigns over these lands: the aloe vera, keenly cultivated so it can express its healing powers at their best.
