An unmissable event for collectors, artists and all art enthusiasts wishing to have an immersive cultural experience with the best art galleries from around the world!
This May there could not be a better place to be that New York City, where an exceptional exhibition of unique artworks from both newly discovered artists and real masters of the most recent art will blow your mind away. From 5th to 8th May, the fifth edition of Frieze New York is expected to be a real Wonderland for all contemporary art lovers, placed between Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx. More than 200 galleries from over 30 countries around the world will make their appearance at Randall’s Island Park near the East River, subverting your ideas and expectations on all levels.
Established by Amanda Sharp and Matthew Slotover, Frieze gives its name not only to the annual art fairs Frieze London and Frieze Masters In New York in October, but also to art magazines and, from 2016, to an art academy. Frieze New York started in 2012 as younger sister of Frieze London, one of the world’s most influential contemporary art fairs, and has been growing a lot in these years. This art fair in NYC is a taste of what is yet to come in latest contemporary art tendencies and a journey into the most innovative artistic minds of our times.
What you will find at Frieze New York 2016
The international taste of the Frieze New York already starts in its Main Section, where more than half of the selected galleries come from outside the USA, from countries such as Brazil, India, Israel, Italy, Belgium, Japan, Peru, South Africa and South Korea among the others. Walking throughout the bright and long building shaped as an elegant snake, you will be surprised by the strong presence of female artists which enriches this year edition, and by the careful selection of young and under-recognized artists and galleries displayed in the three specially curated sections – Spotlight, Focus and Frame.
If you’re an enthusiast of avant-garde pieces, Spotlight will probably be your favourite space: iconic figures of the 20th century will exhibit here rarely seen works made after 1960s, spanning from American, European and Latin roots. On the contrary, those curious about the youngest and most innovative trends of global contemporary art will have their thirst satisfied moving on to the other sections. In fact, Focus will present 33 young and cutting-edge galleries founded in or after 2004, displaying artworks never exhibited before within a fair context, while Frame will host 18 of the most exciting solo artists and galleries from around the globe under eight years old.
The magic and wonder of Frieze Projects
The real attractions of Frieze New York are Frieze Projects and Frieze Sounds, annual non-profit programs of site-specific artistic commissions aimed at subverting the rythm of the event. This year, nine international artists will present their enchanting projects, spanning among performances, audio and sculpture installations and creating almost an enchanting atmosphere. The giant floating balloon-work by Alex Da Corte and the performers wearing mirrors staged by Eduardo Navarro as “clouds followers” will animate the park outside the fair, while inside the futuristic inhabitable car Kar-a-Sutra conceived by Italian architect Mario Bellini will be reinterpreted by British artist Anthea Hamilton.
But the wonders are not over yet: the visitors will be struck by Heather Phillipson’s multi-sensory objects throughout the serpentine main structure, reimagined as a spinal chord, and by the pickpocket hired by David Horvitz who will secretly honour them with small art statuettes. In addition, this year creative tribute to exponents that radically transformed contemporary art includes a special project by the controversial Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan to celebrate the Daniel Newburg Gallery, active between 1984 and 1994 in New York. The notes of another Italian artist, Giorgio Andreotta Calò, instead, will cheer visitors throughout the fair thanks to the project Frieze Sounds.
Spreading the love for art with Frieze Talks and Frieze Education
Completing the immersive experience in contemporary art, talks, panels and conversations with well known contemporary exponents will run alongside the fair. Frieze Talks will be an opportunity to gain insights about the most critical and current artistic issues, such as the way in which the digital era and its technology change the artistic representation and the intimate relation between art and poetry among the others. In addition, on May 8 a movie presented by the non-profit programme Frieze Teen will explore student’s responses to the art they see in museums and galleries, talking about the experience of Frieze Education for high school students from underserved communities.
To sum up, the reasons to take a look at Frieze New York 2016 are endless, as endless are the gems that you will find in this contemporary art fair, unique in the world.
