A dream house stands on the Noto valley hills, in the Hearth of Sicily. Where the nature of the place seems to follow the frills a dress. Here the name of the house, Dimora delle Balze (House on the Frills). The house has an ancient history and today it is an event location, an holiday retreat and a interior design icon house. A Masseria-style villa, hanging between history and contemporary design.
HISTORY IS WRITTEN ON THE WALLS
When the doorway opens in from of you, you are immediately ravished by the enchanting time signs that were maintained during the restoration of the house. The patina is clear on the stones floors and on the walls that are purposely stretched. And the details of the past quite transpire from the walls. From the Roman past of the columns, to the Bizantine particulars, to the Renaissance frescos. “This is a place that links people and history” -says the owner -. “There’s an emerging positive energy that creates harmony”.
The house is linked with a love story. Pino Lobs gives the house to his wife, Elena, for her 60th birthday. They give a lavish party with hundreds of guests, as Sicilian tradition wants. And they realize this is a perfect location for parties. They completely restore the house and they decide to give it in rent for events and holiday stay. The house could be a five star hotel, but it’s not possible to let only a room: you must rent the entire villa.
There is a main house, with rooms looking out three different courtyards. However there are more intimate rooms located in the ancient stables and warehouses, detached from the villa. The contemporary design furnishing crate a marvelous contrast with the ancient architecture of the building. There’s also a winter garden for events. And a stunning swimming pool with salted water.
COLORS AND NATURE
Art is a pivotal aspect of the Dimora delle Balze. Pieces of creative Sicilian Artists are on show between the walls of the villa. Different colors and different styles make this house quite unique. And every detail is custom made. Every design piece was chosen because it was sending back to some particular of the house: to create a dialogue between past and present.
The intensive decorative research was partially carried on in Morocco. With the help of architects and landscape designers such as Renzo Serafini, Katrin Arena and Antonio Sciortino. Styles and colors mix between the various rooms. But natural and neutral colors dominate. Such as green that comes in the house from the outside; from the extensive meadows where herbs, jasmines and lemons were planted. Filling both the eyesight and the sense of smell.
