Castello del Nero dates back to the XII century, when the del Nero family built this manor as a summer residence. Indeed it was a common custom, for the noble florentine families, to build a retreat on the Chianti hills in order to escape from the terrible heat that suffocates Florence during the summer time. The family kept the castle for centuries. Adding the chapel devoted to San Michele Arcangelo, or the structure of the Italian Garden.
In 1825 the family died out and the property passed to the Torrigianis. The castle was then bought in the year 2000 by the italo-american Rober Trotta, with the aim of turning the estate in the most luxurious hotel Chianti had ever seen. After six years of renovation, trying to keep the traditional structure as much as possible, Castello del Nero hotel and Spa opened its doors. And last year, in 2016, it celebrated its first 10 years of success.
50 rooms and suites. Each one preserving the original charme of the castle. Although the detail that blinds every guests with its beauty is the stunning view on the tuscan hills. The Royal Galway Suite, for example, boasts a private terrace from which guests can admire the medieval towns of San Donato and Barberino. While the Presidential Suite, on the noble floor of the castle, is composed by two double bedrooms completely frescoed and a big hall. Although even the Superior rooms have unique details and characteristics. Such as frescoes, antique furniture, ancient floors and beamed ceilings.

The restaurant La Torre, one Michelin star, updates its menu every season in order to always offer the best of nature products. As the chef Di Pirro says, “If you want quality, you have to follow Mother Nature”. Therefore, zucchini, peas and aromatic herbs in spring. Fresh fish in the summer time, like the lobster with lime and tarragon. Wild boar, mushrooms, chestnuts and truffle in autumn. And creative dishes with simple roots, like the the chicken egg with parmesan, asparagus and cheek lard. Everything strictly homemade, from bread, to sweets. To fruits and vegetables, harvested in the castle’s vegetable garden.
La Taverna instead offers simple recipes belonging to the great tuscan tradition. Homemade pasta, cold cuts and tuscan soups. The everlasting chianina steak and the grilled chicken from Chianti. Even a Castello del Nero pizza with four gourmet varieties. Olive oil is produced at the castle, using the plants of the estate’s 300 hectares olive trees. During the beautiful season, guests can dine outdoors, by the pool. While in the winter, the restaurant is located inside the ancient and evocative kitchens.
If guests go down the stairs towards the cellars, they will encouter “one of the best wine lists in the world” as Wine Spectator wrote. Here, the Enoteca organizes wine tastings with cold cuts and cheeses. In addition to short courses about the history of Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino. Always with an eye on the tuscan reds, such as the Pieve del Nero or the Levriero, produced in the Castle with its own vineyards.
